Dr. Horatio H. Conant arrived in Maumee in 1816 from Mansfield, Connecticut and opened a store in conjunction with Almon Gibbs. He later practiced medicine from Defiance, OH to Monroe, MI. He also was a teacher and held several public office positions, including Judge of the Court of Common Pleas.

John E. Hunt came to Maumee in 1816 and operated a mercantile business, primarily with the Native Americans Indians. In 1833, he received 320 acres in the Treaty of Maumee with the Ottawa Indians as a result of his “many acts of kindness”. He later served in local and state government positions.

Morrison R. Waite removed to Maumee City from Lyme, Connecticut in 1838, forming a law partnership with Samuel M. Young. In 1849 the Whig Party elected him to the Ohio General Assembly. He later served as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1874 until his death in 1888.

Bridge Tokens …

Maumee and Perrysburg Toll Bridge Company Token

(enlarged image; actual size is about 3/4” in diameter)

The Maumee & Perrysburg Bridge Company issued and sold tokens for passage across the bridge, as government-issued coins were scarce during the American Civil War from 1862 to 1865.

Tokens were stamped from brass or copper; the token at left is dated 1863.
