Harold Arthur Harold Smith of Edmonton passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Monday, October 26, 2009 at the age of 98. Asserting his independence until the end, Harold died as a consequence of a fall he took while walking along Whyte Avenue on his way to get a haircut after doing some business at the Alberta Treasury Branch where he has been a customer since they opened. Left to marvel at Harold's amazing life and to cherish his memory are his five children Donald (Jane) Smith of Edmonton, Marilyn (Garry) Nelson of Calgary, Melvyn (Donna) Smith of Faro, Grant (Elsie) Smith of Canmore and Hal Smith of Edmonton, along with his sister, Grace Fitzsimmons of Vancouver, his cousin, Art O'Hanlon of Edmonton, Karen Smith of St. Albert whom he loved like a daughter, 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren (and still counting), as well as many nieces, nephews, and special friends. Harold was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy, who passed away on October 30th 1994, his sister Gertrude Aberdeen, and his brother Earl Smith. Harold's parents, Robert and Elizabeth Smith, were pioneers who homesteaded in the Rabbit Hill area along 23rd Avenue in Edmonton. Harold was born in that farmhouse, the oldest of four children. He used to take fresh produce to the farmers' market, which was the beginning of Smith Produce Company, a business specializing in the preparation and packaging of fresh poultry, eggs and butter. Harold sold that company in 1952 but continued his love of commerce with involvement in over 80 other businesses and properties. Principle among them were Valley Dairies, Sterling Motors, O'Hanlon Paving, Edcan Enterprises, Mauka Properties, and H. A. Holdings. Harold had a reputation as being an honest, hard-working businessman, an adventurous outdoorsman, a giver to the community, and a loving and generous provider for his wife and family. Harold was laid to rest in Mount Pleasant Cemetery on Wednesday October 28, 2009 after an intimate Memorial Service attended by immediate family members. A celebration of Harold's life and an opportunity for a broader group of relatives and friends to remember Harold and pay their respects will be held in May of 2010 shortly after what would have been Harold's 99th Birthday. Please email haroldsmith2010@gmail.com if you wish to be advised when plans have been finalized. The family of Harold Smith wishes to thank the Good Samaritan who assisted Harold on Whyte Avenue and called the ambulance and to extend our gratitude to the Paramedics and the University of Alberta Hospital staff in Emergency and Unit 4A2 who attended to Harold's needs during his last few days. We also wish to thank Serenity Funeral Services for their sensitive and professional handling of the Memorial Service and Interment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the United Way, the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Alberta, or to the Alzheimer Society of Alberta.
