A native of Germany, Mr. Frankowski lived in Toledo 68 years. His home was at 3319 Franklin Ave. Prior to entering the home three years ago, he worked in the mail order department at Willys Motors, Inc. for nine years. Mary [SZCZECINSKI] Frankowski (Louis' daughter-in-law) related to me in 1988 that Louis was re-married to(or lived with)a woman whose last name was BRIEF and that she had a son, Louis Brief(by a previous marriage) who ran a bar/restaurant/2-lane bowling alley at the corner of Lagrange and Oakland in Toledo. It wasn't until 2013 when I found a marriage license application for Louis FRANKOWSKI and Celia BRYWCZYNSKI that this was verified. In the 1940 US Census, son Louis BRYWCZYNSKI's occupation is "Proprietor-Beer Parlor". His obituary in the Toledo Blade newspaper (05 Sep 1976) gives both names, BRIEF and BRYWCZYNSKi and identifies the bar as "Mary Lou's Cafe".

Obituary from Detroit Free Press newspaper: Frank Reed did downtown Detroiters a favor back in 1942 when he opened the first Qwikee Donut & Coffee Shop in the lobby of the old Hammond Building, where the National Bank of Detroit Building now stands. He provided them with a place to gulp a cup of coffee and read the papers before arriving at work on time. Mr. Reed's idea was to slip newspaper pages into glass eases and mount them on the wall at eye level. Standup counters were installed along the walls, allowing hurried customers to read and eat at the same time. "If the Free Press, the News, and the (Detroit) Times weren't up when the crowds hit the door in the morning, believe me, Frank would hear about it, "said his wife, Hazelle, a retired Detroit elementary school teacher. Mr. Reed, 77, died Aug. 16 of a heart attack aboard the ocean liner Queen Elizabeth 2. He and his wife were enroute to Southampton, England, where they were to begin a tour of Europe. Mr. Reed opened two other Qwikee shops downtown, but sold all three to his partner, John Weise (now deceased), in 1956 after suffering a heart attack. By 1959 his health was much improved, and he opened a fourth Qwikee shop in the lobby of 1149 Griswold near State Street. Today, the Qwikee Company is owned by Albert Hermann, who has seven Qwikee shops downtown, two in Troy, and one in the Fisher Building. Mounted newspapers and stand-up counters, however, no longer exist. Services for Mr. Reed, who moved to Palm Beach, Fla., last September, will be at at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Scott Cemetery in Huron, Ohio. A memorial service will be held in early October at the Royal Poinciana Chapel in Palm Beach. Surviving are Mr. Reed's wife, two brothers, and one sister.
