He is a graduate of the Libbey High School Class of 1962 and a recipient of The Toledo Edison Company’s Stephen K. Mahon Scholarship in Engineering. In high school, he played piano in several dance bands performing at area teen dances and performed in Libbey’s Rhythm Roundup show.

Gary was a paperboy from 1955 to 1965, delivering both The Toledo Blade and The Toledo Times newspapers and is a Life Member of The Old Newsboys GoodFellows organization.

He was active in Toledo area drag racing circles in the 1960s and served as the classifying judge for “Hot Rod” Harry at the former Glass City Dragway at Metcalf Field. He raced his red 1962 Pontiac at Norwalk Dragway, Milan Dragway, and Detroit Dragway in addition to Glass City and won many class and bracket trophies over his racing career.

Gary worked part-time in the Substation Department of Toledo Edison in the early 1960’s and joined Surface Combustion Company in 1963 as an instrument technician in the Research & Development Laboratory at the former Dorr Street complex. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toledo in 1968. Upon graduation, Gary joined Surface as a full-time engineer in the Steel Mill Division and became Manager of the Combustion Control & Instrumentation Department.

In 1972, he joined SSOE Engineers - Architects (formerly Samborn, Steketee, Otis & Evans, Inc.) as a project manager in the Industrial Division and obtained registration as a professional engineer in the State of Ohio. He was named an Associate of the firm in 1976 and was promoted to Manager of the Process Engineering Department.

For an eight-year period beginning in 1975, Gary managed the design of Union Carbide’s graphite electrode plant in Clarksville, Tennessee. At the time, the project was the single largest commission the company had ever received. In 1981, Gary was elected a shareholder of the company, was named Assistant Division Manager in 1985, and in 1989 became Manager of the Manufacturing Process Division.

In 1991, Gary was named Corporate Director of the Computer Systems Technology Group at SSOE and also served as Corporate Chief Engineer of Manufacturing Process Design. Over a five-year period, he campaigned relentlessly to provide everyone in the company with a computer and to train them to become users of computers and technology. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of SSOE Systems, Inc. a subsidiary of SSOE specializing in turnkey control systems and solar energy systems. Gary achieved a special life-long goal in reaching early retirement from full-time engineering practice in 1998.

He married the former Loretta Ann Gobel of Bloom Township (Wood County) on September 9, 1967 in Monroe Street Methodist Church in Toledo. They moved to Perrysburg in 1969 and made their home there on Margaret Place and Mark Lane before moving to Belmont Lake Road in 1986. Gary is an avid gardener and landscaper, raising many varieties of flowers, bushes, and trees. He and his wife travel extensively throughout the United States during which he exercises his hobby of amateur photography and has assembled a very large collection of pictures, slides, movies, and videos. An avid outdoorsman, Gary enjoys sailing his Hobie Cat 16, camping at Higgins Lake in Michigan, and kayaking and bass fishing on the Maumee River. He enjoys doing the many simple things of life with family: walking with Lori on hiking trails at Oak Openings Preserve and Side Cut Park, windsurfing, fishing and kayaking with his son Gary, and helping his daughter Kristy fix her car and build things.

His other interests and hobbies included genealogy, playing ragtime and march piano music, fishing, reading, computers, home repair projects, the history of Custer’s Last Stand, local history, maps, and micro-brew beer sampling.

Gary was active in area engineering societies and activities. He served as the Vice-President of Programs for the Technical Society of Toledo and several terms as a trustee for the Toledo Society of Professional Engineers. Gary was a registered professional engineer in fourteen states. He served several terms as a trustee of the Engineers Foundation of Ohio and was instrumental in organizing the EFO’s “MathCounts” program locally and statewide as chairman. During the construction of the Maumee-Perrysburg Bridge in 2002, Gary operated an Internet website documenting the construction with more than 600 pictures and historical information. Later he authored a book, "Bridges At The Foot Of The Rapids - An Illustrated History of Maumee-Perrysburg, Ohio River Crossings And Construction of the 2002 Fort Meigs Memorial Bridge".

He is a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church in Perrysburg and has served on the church’s Family Life Council, Worship Committee, Administrative Council, Good Samaritan Council, and Usher’s Committee.

Loretta Ann GOBEL "Lori" was born on 13 Jun 1945 in Findlay, OH. She married Gary Lewis FRANKS on 9 Sep 1967.

From the Toledo Blade newspaper 10-Sep-1967: Loretta Ann Gobel, Matson Street, became the bride of Gary L. Franks in a ceremony Saturday in Monroe Street Methodist Church. Mrs. Franks is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gobel, Bloomdale, O., and Mr. Franks is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Franks, Yosemite Drive. Following a reception in Reeder Hall of the church, Mr. and Mrs. Franks left on a trip to the Pocono Mountains. They will live at 3140 Matson St.

Lori is a graduate of the Elmwood High School Class of 1963 and was active in many school activities and the Bloomdale “Cloverettes”. She worked part-time as a “Candy Striper” at Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green and it was there that she established that she wanted to become a nurse and care for other people. She earned her Degree in Nursing at the former Toledo Hospital School of Nursing in 1966. Upon graduation, Lori joined Toledo Hospital as a full-time Registered Nurse in the Psychiatric Ward. In 1969, she was promoted to Head Nurse on the floor.

In 1970, Lori “retired” to become a full-time mother to her newborn son, Gary. In 1973, she gave birth to her daughter, Kristin. She was a very devoted wife and mother, always putting the other needs and wants of the family before her own. She was an excellent homemaker and housekeeper, being well-noted among her friends for having a “dustless” home at all times. This was a real challenge at times considering the habits of two teenagers and a husband predisposed to making a mess in his computer room.

She married Gary L. Franks of Toledo on September 9, 1967 in Monroe Street Methodist Church in Toledo. They moved to Perrysburg in 1969 and made their home there on Margaret Place and Mark Lane before moving to Belmont Lake Road in 1986. Lori is very interested in house plants and gardening and keeps more than 80 varieties of indoor plants. She enjoys camping with the family every summer at Higgins Lake in Michigan and doing the many simple things of life with them: walking with Gary on hiking trails at Oak Openings every spring and fall, playing board games with her son Gary, and cooking, shopping and doing art projects with her daughter Kristy. Her other interests and hobbies include sewing, nature, walking, bridge card games, and volleyball.

She is a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church in Perrysburg and has served on the church’s Family Life Council and Administrative Council.
