He then took the helm of the Miami program before moving on as the head coach at Northwestern from 1957-62. Obituary from the Massillon Independent newspaper: FORMER TIGER CAGE STAR BILL ROHR IS DEAD AT 68 - For the second time in less than a month, a star athlete from Washington High's Class of '36 has died. Bill Rohr, 68, died Tuesday in Oxford, where he is a member of the Miami University Athletic Hall of Fame. His death was caused by liver failure, according to a spokesman at the sports information office at Ohio University. Rohr had reservations to attend the 50th reunion of the WHS Class of '36 July 26. Eddie Molinski, a standout lineman under Paul Brown on the unbeaten 1936 Massillon football team, died last month in Memphis. He, too, had planned to come to the 50th reunion. Rohr made his name in basketball. He also played under the coaching of Brown, who doubled as the Tigers' basketball mentor. He was a star on the 1935-36 team that compiled a 14-2 record. "Paul Brown would be a good guy to talk about Bill, because they remained close through the years," said Augie Morningstar, a former Massillon teammate of Rohr. "Brown used to say that Bill was the best basketball player he coached." Brown could not be reached this morning in Cincinnati. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Jackson Township. Interment will follow. A service also will be conducted in Oxford, at 2 p.m. Friday, at the Miami University Chapel across the street from the Student Center. Survivors include Rohr's wife, the former Mary Ellen Studer of Massillon; one son, James Rohr of Oxford; two daughters, Mrs. Russell (Susan) Wickerham of Worthington and Mrs. Arthur (Julie) Staehling of Cincinnati; a sister, Janice Myers of North Canton; and four grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. The family requests no flowers be sent. donations may be sent to the Bill Rohr Memorial Athletic Fund at either Miami or Ohio University. Rohr served as a president of the National Association of College Athletic Directos and was viewed by many as a pioneer in womens' college athletics. "Womens' athletics will continue to grow like topsy," he said in 1976, his last year as the national president. "Womens' athletics should be treated with total respect, although I hope the 'must-win' philosophy doesn't carry over to them." Rohr and his wife moved to Oxford in 1978 after he retired as Athletic Director of Miami's arch-rival, Ohio University. Rohr played basketball at Jones Junior High, WHS and Ohio Wesleyan College before returning to Massillon to coach basketball at Longfellow Junior High. He became head basketball coach at Portsmouth High and compiled an 82-29 record. As head coach at Miami U. his record was 90-47. He was Athletic Director at Ohio U. for 15 years.

Report of death from the Massillon Independent newspaper: UNDER THE WHEELS - Dreadful Death of Young Charles A. Koontz - Instantly Killed On Monday - While Riding to Columbian Heights on a C.L.&W Freight Train He Falls Under the Cars - The Body Shockingly Mangled - The Coroner Investigates - Charles A. Koontz, the 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Koontz, who reside at 95 Duncan Street, was instantly killed Monday evening at about 7:15 o'clock by falling from a C. L. & W. freight train. Young Koontz and Elmer Smart, a companion, were standing near the west end of the Tremont Street Bridge when Smart proposed that they board the freight and go Columbian Heights and see George Loomis, a friend who is employed in the W.& L.E. yards. Koontz assented, and, stepping to the train, got on first, his companion catching a car some distance behind him. Koontz climbed up between two cars, while Smart stood on the step. After riding some distance young Smart alighted and called to his comrade to do the same. When the train had passed Smart, [he] whistled several times and upon failing to receive a response began to walk down the track. He met a brakeman on the way who informed him that some young man had fallen from the train and had been killed. Smart inquired as to the appearance of the dead body and the description given convinced him that the body was that of Charles Koontz. The body was then removed to the C.L.& W. station from whence his parents were notified and Coroner McQuate summoned. The body was found lying on the west side of the track, the train having passed directly over his neck severing the head from his body. From the position in which his remains were found it was evident that he was in the act of alighting when he fell under the cars. Charles Koontz was a promising young man and his sudden and horrible death has almost prostrated his mother. He was one of four children and was employed at the Massillon Bridge Works. The funeral will be held from the residence at 1:30 o'clock and at St. John’s Evangelical Church at two o'clock, Wednesday afternoon. Coroner McQuate has not yet taken the testimony of the witnesses and therefore has not yet given a verdict, but it will doubtless be that of accidental death.
F vi Elisabeth B. KOONTZ was born on 16 Feb 1884. She died on 25 Feb 1931.
