Obituary from the Toledo Blade: James Hall Brown, of 409 Floyd St., died yesterday in his home. He was 55. A native of Toledo, he operated the W. O. Brown Brokerage Company since the death of his father, W. O. Brown, more than a year ago. He was a member of Old Cavalry Troop D, the Maccabees, Trinity Episcopal Church, and the Communications Division of Toledo Defense Council. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Brown; daughter, Betty Lou; mother, Mrs. W. O. Brown; and sister, Miss Henrietta Brown, all of Toledo. Services will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. in the H. H. Birkenkamp Mortuary with the Rev. Benedict Williams of Trinity Church officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Mr. Brown represented the Crawfordsville Casket Company of Crawfordsville, Ind., and the Perfection Barrel Co. of Cleveland.

Bertha E. PECK was born on 6 Nov 1884 in Clayton, MI. She died on 26 May 1952 in Toledo, OH. She was buried in Toledo, OH / Forest Cemetery Sec 27. Bertha married James Hall BROWN on 6 Sep 1913 in Peck's Lake Erie cottage.

Obituary from the TOledo Blade newspaper: Mrs. Bertha Brown, 417 Floyd St., local representative of the Crawfordsville (Ind.) Casket Co., died yesterday in Mercy Hospital after a 2-week illness. She was 67. A native of Clayton, Mich., Mrs. Brown lived in Toledo 60 years. She was a member ot Trinity Episcopal Church and Daughters of the Church, and League of Women Voters, and had worked in the OSU Canteen during World War II. Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Louise, and brothers Arthur L. Peck, Lambertville, Mich., and Howard K. Peck, Ceresco, Mich. Services will be conducted Thursday at 11a.m. in the H. H. Birkenkamp Mortuary, Broadway, by the Rev. Arthur W. Hargate, pastor of Trinity Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery.

Obituary from the Toledo Blade newspaper: Elizabeth Louise Brown died on January 29, 2002, in San Antonio, TX. The only child of the late James and Bertha Brown, she was born in Toledo, OH, on May 18, 1918. A professional librarian, Ms. Brown, affectionately known as Betty Lou, worked in Japan as a Department of Defense Schools librarian, and in Japan and England as an air force librarian. She ended her professional career at Kelly AFB, where she was the base librarian. An avid collector of Japanese woodblock prints, she accumulated a large collection of museum quality prints. In addition, she was a lifelong student of ikebana (Japanese flower arranging), and attained the Sogetsu School's highest degree. Her life was one of giving, and she leaves behind a host of friends and former students, all of whom remember her with deep affection.  A Memorial service will be held at The Church of Reconciliation (Episcopal) on Starcrest Avenue, San Antonio, on Sunday, February 10, at 2 p.m. Donations to your favorite charity, in lieu of flowers, is requested. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Porter Loring Mortuary, San Antonio.

From the Toledo News-Bee newspaper 17 Jan 1905: DYING IN A FEDERAL PRISON - Walter Brown, Formerly Meat Inspector Here, Is In A Serious Condition - Walter Brown, who was meat inspector in Toledo while Guy Major was mayor, is dying in the United States Military Prison in Fort Leavenwirth, Kan. Brown was prominent in Indiana politics and finance. The Consolidated Bag and Paper Company was one of his enterprises. He was a director in the bank of which his brother-in-law was president, and was convicted of misapplying $428,977. The former Toledoan was sentenced to eight years at Fort Leavenworth. He has consumption and the prison doctor says he won't live a year. Application for parole that he may go home to die has been made to Attorney General Moody at washington.

From the Warsaw Daily Union newspaper 12 Feb 1906: Walter Brown GIves Up Hope Of Getting Pardon - Walter Brown, the Elkhart bank wrecker, has abandoned all effort to secure his release by appeal from the Ft. Leavenworth federal prison and resigned himself to his fate. This information has been brought by one of the deputy marshals who went to Ft. Leavenworth with a federal prisoner. It is also said that Brown's conduct has improved and he no longer is classed among the fractious prisoners. As a result he is being given credit by Warden McLaughry abd his term will be shortened thereby. Brown also has abandoned all hope of being granted executive clemency. He is not playing the sick dodge any  longer and in appearance looks as good as the majority of healthy prisoners. Collins also has resigned himself to his fate and Brodrick's good humor and philosophic view of the situation have undergone no change.

Obituary from the Warsaw Union newspaper 19 May 1923: Walter Brown of Elkhart Pneumonia Victim - Walter Brown, 60, of Elkhart, identified with the Indiana National Bank of that city at the time of the failure about 20 years ago, died Saturday at Evansville, where he had motored with his wife for the purpose of establishing a factory. Burial will be at Elkhart.

Walter was "dis-owned" by the rest of the family after he was convicted in 1904 of violations of the National Banking Act and sentenced to an eight-year term, serving time from 22-Apr-1904 to 02-Mar-1910 in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. Bertha divorced him on 15-May-1907 while he was in prison. After his release, Walter BROWN founded the Webster Electric Company in Racine, WI and eventually returned to Elkhart County, IN before his death. A connection between the two families was made in 1994 when David R. BROWN contacted me via Rosalie [BROWN] HOUSEL and our family histories were exchanged.

Bertha Letitia COLLINS was born on 16 May 1865 in Marion Co, IA. She died on 4 May 1937 in Los Angeles, CA. Bertha married Walter BROWN on 18 Oct 1887 in Marion Co, IA. The marriage ended in divorce.
