Stephen Brown Family Geneaology

Stephen Charles BROWN was born on 9 Nov 1754 in Kensington, Middlesex, England. He was christened on 26 Nov 1754 in Scots Church, Westminster, Middlesex, England. He died in Oct 1812 in Lambeth, Surrey, England. Stephen married Mary BRAY on 30 Aug 1783 in St. George, Hanover Square / St. Martin in the Field Parish.

Research and information for the Stephen BROWN Family courtesy of David Randolph BROWN, Palo Alto, CA. He is the author of "Brown and Burger Family Letters: 1812 - 1907". He is the grandson of Walter BROWN, brother of Herbert Cutway BROWN, my great grandfather. Apparently, Walter was "dis-owned" by the rest of the family after he was convicted in 1904 of violations of the National Banking Act and served time in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. A connection between the two families was made in 1994 when David R. BROWN contacted me via Rosalie [BROWN] HOUSEL and our family histories were exchanged.

In Holden's Triennial Directory, 1805/1806/1807, Stephen BROWN is described as carpenter and joiner. In the 1809/1810/1811 directory, his name is followed by "timber & coal yard, Vauxhall", a business that he operated from 1809 to 1811 with James Francis.

Regarding his death: Prerogative Court of Canterbury administration reads "On the second day (of December 1812) Adm(inistrati)on of the Good, Chattels & Credits of Stephen Brown, late of Kennington in the parish of Saint Mary Lambeth in the County of Surrey deceased, was granted to Mary Brown, Widow the Relict, having been first sworn duly to Administer."

Mary BRAY was born in 1758 in Kensington, Middlesex, England. She died on 23 Jul 1819 in Lambeth, Surrey, England. Mary married Stephen Charles BROWN on 30 Aug 1783 in St. George, Hanover Square / St. Martin in the Field Parish.

Regarding her death: Prerogative Court of Canterbury administration reads: "On the seventh day (of August 1819) adm(inistrati)on of all and singular the goods, chattels and credits of Mary Brown, late of Devonshire Street, Kennington, in the parish of Saint Mary Lambeth in the County of Surrey, widow, deceased, was granted to Mary Rutherford, wife of George Rutherford, the natural and lawful daughter and one of the next of kin of the said deceased, being first sworn to adm(iniste)r.
