In 1850 Samuel was living in Orleans Co, NY  where he purchased a part of Lot #43, 14th Township, 2nd Range of the Holland Land Company. He received 25 acres for $300 from John W. Brown on April 15, 1848. In 1855, he sold his land and moved to Chicago. In 1860 Samuel and his family were living in Kalamazoo Co, MI with his brother George F. BROWN.

Rufus Meade Stivers was born in Greenwich, Connecticut on February 10, 1822 to James and Maria (Searles) Stivers. James, a highly skilled blacksmith and wheelwright of Dutch ancestry, conducted business in nearby Port Chester, New York. Young Rufus attended a private elementary school in North Castle, N.Y. after which he joined his two older brothers, James Edward and William, in the family business. By the time his father passed away (November 19, 1832 or March 12, 1834) his older sister, Eliza had left home and married Edward Scofield and as Rufus was under the age of 14, his eldest brother James E., was appointed his guardian. Rufus married Sarah B. Burger and to the blessed union was born a son, George E. W. Stivers on July 26, 1845 at Port Chester, N. Y. In 1849 Stivers relocated his growing family to Manhattan where he started a small carriage repair shop which by 1851 had relocated to East Thirty-first Street between Third and Fourth Avenue.

Obituary from the New York Times newspaper: Rufus M. Stivers, vice-president of the National Carriage Builders Association of America, died Thursday aftenoon at his home, 225 Rutledge Street, Williamsburg, of injuries received a week ago yesterday by being struck by a cable car at East Thirtieth Street and Third Avenue, Manhattan. Mr. Stivers had set out from his factory at 144-152 East Thirty-first Street, and when the car struck him, he was dragged along for a few feet. His right leg was fractured and he was taken to the New York Hospital. On the next day, he was removed to his home, where pneumonia set in. He was unconcious for several hours before his death. Mr. Stivers was born at Greenwich, Conn., in 1822. He was the son of a blacksmith and wheelright, and early in life the learned the trade. He became a carriage maker, and in 1855, when he came to New York, he established the present large carriage plant in East Thirty-first Street. He belonged to Kane Lodge, F&AM, the Order of the Mystic Shrine, and also the Order of Scottish Rites, as well as the Union League Club of Manhattan. He formerly belonged to the Larchmont, New Rochelle and Knickerbocker Yacht Clubs, the Fleetwood Driving Club, the Good Roads Association, and other organizations. Mr. Stivers was twice married. His first wife died in 1897, and five months ago he married Mary Elizabeth Moore, a well-known Brooklyn citizen. He is survived by a wife and three sons. Funeral services will be held tonight and the interment will be tomorrow in the family plot at Woodlawn.
