Obituary from The Blade newspaper: Olga Victoria de Carvalho Heydt Housel, 59, passed away November 15, 2008, after a long, difficult battle with Bulbar ALS. Together, Olga and her husband, David Housel, fought this disease with courage, though they both knew this was a fight that could not be won. The devotion they had for each other through their 25 year marriage was only strengthened during her illness. Olga was a brilliant woman who was fluent in four different languages, but ALS made her mind unable to communicate with her body. Although she knew what to say and do; she could no longer make her body respond. She first lost her ability to communicate and eventually lost lung capacity. Anyone who met Olga only after ALS should know she was a strong, intelligent, and caring person with an extremely outgoing personality. She loved telling stores with her own added exaggeration, being with her children and her husband, laughing, learning, and making sure her house was immaculate. Those who knew Olga before she had ALS have the privilege of remembering the loving, entertaining person that she was.Olga was born on June 23, 1949, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her childhood was spent on a farm in Brazil, until she moved to Rio to live with her grandmother. In high school she received a scholarship for her amazing ability with language, which allowed her to study abroad and learn English. Later she received her undergraduate degree in History and education, which eventually led to a Masters in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She later earned her Montessori certificate and used her amazing abilities to teach young children. She was working as a guidance secretary in a private school in Brazil when she met the love of her life. They instantly bonded through their love of the country and plants. They loved each other not only for what each was, but for who they were when they were together. Soon, they started their 25 year marriage. They eventually moved to her husband's hometown of Temperance, MI, where she proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1995. They worked together at the family business of Housel's Nursery, where she learned quickly everything there was to know about the business. She became a certified nurserywoman and would design beautiful landscapes for families in the area. She took care of Dave and he took care of her. The love they shared was unbreakable even through her assing. They formed a family, each with two children from previous marriages, and eventually having a child together in 1985. Her husband and children were her world.Olga is survived by her devoted husband, David Housel; her children, Joana Czellnik, Sylvia Stern, David Myron Housel, Larry David Housel, and Tammy Hauff; her three grandchildren, Austin, Ava, and Jada and her sister, Teresa Balassiano. She will be greatly missed by her family. The family would like to thank the many kind people who helped Olga during her illness, especially Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Gray for their constant support, Marie Hubbard for all the cards through the years, Cindy Tomesek for her many lunches and kindness to Olga, and her physician, Dr. Reames.
