David Brown FRANKS' body was cremated and his ashes sit on Cheryl's baby grand piano, a very appropiate place as Dave was an accomplished pianist.

Obituary from the Toledo Blade newspaper: David B. Franks, of Dudley Street in Maumee, passed away unexpectedly August 4,1995 at home. He was the first son of Albin and Virginia (Brown) Franks, born on April 29,1941. He was a graduate of the Libbey High School Class of 1959 and a recipient of The DeVilbiss Company's College Scholarship in Engineering. David was active in Toledo area drag racing circles in the 1960's. He also played piano in several dance bands performing at area teen dances in the late 1950s and early 1960's. He worked for Dow Chemical (Findlay) in the early 1960's and joined Surface Combustion Company in 1967 as an engineer-in-training at the former Dorr Street complex. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toledo in 1968. Upon graduation, David joined Surface as a full time machine design engineer in the Steel Mill Division and became Chief engineer of the Rich Fume Incinerator Group. During this time he authored and received a patent for a high temperature material handling device. In 1979, he joined SSOE (formerly Samborn, Steketee, Otis & Evans) Inc., as a machine design engineer in the Industrial Division and obtained his registration as a professional engineer. He married the former Cheryl Waldeck of Toledo on May 7, 1969 in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Maumee. They moved to Maumee In 1969 and made their home on Dudley Street. David was an avid car mechanic, gardener and lover of nature. He loved his family and enjoyed doing the many simple things of life with them such as taking walks in the woods and visiting the "flats" on the Maumee River at SideCut Park. David was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife Cheryl; children, Andre and Aaron; brothers, Gary (Lori) of Perrysburg; Neal (Carla) of Huntington Beach, CA; and Dennis (Gretchen) of Bellevue, WA. Friends and neighbors may call at the Maison-Dardenne Funeral Home, Maumee, OH, after 3 p.m. Monday. Services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at I p.m. The family requests that tributes and memorials be in the form of donations to a scholarship fund for Andre and Aaron.

ENGINEER WORKED FOR SSOE

David Franks, machine design engineer for SSOE, Inc., who played in dance bands and raced cars in his youth, died of an apparent heart attack Friday in his Maumee home. He was 54. Mr. Franks, a professional engineer, worked in the industrial division of the architectural and engineering firm for 17 years. "He just liked the pure engineering work," his wife Cheryl, said. "He seemed to have this photographic memory. He knew it all, down cold." As an engineer for Surface Combustion Co., where he worked 12 years, he received a patent for a high-temperature material-handling device. He was hired as a machine design engineer there after receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Toledo. Mr. Franks played piano in bands that performed at the Toledo area Teen Town dances in the late 1950s and 1960s. "He had a natural musical ability," his wife said. "He could play anything that was requested." His skill in auto repair helped keep his racecar in top shape, and during the 1960s, he won trophies in drag races at local strips. Mr. Franks, who grew up on Yosemite Drive, was a graduate of Libbey High School. In recent years, he and his wife belonged to a book discussion group. He enjoyed especially taking nature walks and going camping with sons Andre, 17, and Aaron, 7. "He spent so much time with them; that's what's going to be hardest," his wife said. Also surviving are brothers, Gary, Neal, and Dennis. Services will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in the Maison-Dardenne Mortuary, Maumee, where the body will be after 3 p.m. tomorrow

David married Cheryl Lynne WALDECK on 7 May 1969 in Maumee, OH / St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Cheryl was born on 24 Sep 1947 in Toledo, OH. She died on 2 Jan 2009 in Greenville, SC.

Following Dave's untimely death, Cheryl and the two boys moved to Greenville, SC to live near one of Cheryl's sisters in 1997. Obituary from The Blade newspaper: Cheryl Lynne Franks, 61, of Greenville, SC formerly of Maumee, Ohio died Friday, January 02, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, David B. Franks and brother, Richard Alan Waldeck. Born in Toledo Ohio, she was the daughter of Maybelle Waldeck and Richard J. Waldeck. She worked as a computer programmer for Owens Illinois and the University of Toledo, sold Real Estate and worked at the University Center in Greenville, SC. She loved painting, gardening, reading and traveling. Surviving are her two sons, Andre and Aaron; sisters, Shirley Strubing (Steve), Sue Valiton (John), Dianne Hemmert (Mike), Joanne Pasienza (Pete) and brother, Tom Waldeck (Margaret); numerous nieces and nephews and good friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society  or McCalls Hospice House in Simpsonville, SC would be appreciated. Her ashes will be scattered with Dave's along the Maumee River Flats at Side Cut Park in Maumee.

116. Gary Lewis FRANKS (Albin Alexander FRANKS , Louis James , Jakob , Valentine , Johannes Chrysostumus , Adalbertus ) was born on 3 Mar 1944 in Toledo, OH. He was christened in Park Congregational Church / Toledo, OH.

Gary grew up with his family on Yosemite Drive in South Toledo and attended Harvard Grade School from 1949 to 1958.

He is a graduate of the Libbey High School Class of 1962 and a recipient of The Toledo Edison Company’s Stephen K. Mahon Scholarship in Engineering.  In high school, he played piano in several dance bands performing at area teen dances and performed in Libbey’s Rhythm Roundup show.

Gary was a paperboy from 1955 to 1965, delivering both The Toledo Blade and The Toledo Times newspapers and is a Life Member of The Old Newsboys GoodFellows organization.

He was active in Toledo area drag racing circles in the 1960s and served as the classifying judge for “Hot Rod” Harry at the former Glass City Dragway at Metcalf Field. He raced his red 1962 Pontiac at Norwalk Dragway, Milan Dragway, and Detroit Dragway in addition to Glass City and won many class and bracket trophies over his racing career.

Gary worked part-time in the Substation Department of Toledo Edison in the early 1960’s and joined Surface Combustion Company in 1963 as an instrument technician in the Research & Development Laboratory at the former Dorr Street complex. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Toledo in 1968. Upon graduation, Gary joined Surface as a full-time engineer in the Steel Mill Division and became Manager of the Combustion Control & Instrumentation Department.

In 1972, he joined SSOE Engineers - Architects (formerly Samborn, Steketee, Otis & Evans, Inc.) as a project manager in the Industrial Division and obtained registration as a professional engineer in the State of Ohio. He was named an Associate of the firm in 1976 and was promoted to Manager of the Process Engineering Department.

For an eight-year period beginning in 1975, Gary managed the design of Union Carbide’s graphite electrode plant in Clarksville, Tennessee.  At the time, the project was the single largest commission the company had ever received.  In 1981, Gary was elected a shareholder of the company, was named Assistant Division Manager in 1985, and in 1989 became Manager of the Manufacturing Process Division.

In 1991, Gary was named Corporate Director of the Computer Systems Technology Group at SSOE and also served as Corporate Chief Engineer of Manufacturing Process Design. Over a five-year period, he campaigned relentlessly to provide everyone in the company with a computer and to train them to become users of computers and technology. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of SSOE Systems, Inc. a subsidiary of SSOE specializing in turnkey control systems and solar energy systems. Gary achieved a special life-long goal in reaching early retirement from full-time engineering practice in 1998.

He married the former Loretta Ann Gobel of Bloom Township (Wood County) on September 9, 1967 in Monroe Street Methodist Church in Toledo. They moved to Perrysburg in 1969 and made their home there on Margaret Place and Mark Lane before moving to Belmont Lake Road in 1986. Gary is an avid gardener and landscaper, raising many varieties of flowers, bushes, and trees. He and his wife travel extensively throughout the United States during which he exercises his hobby of amateur photography and has assembled a very large collection of pictures, slides, movies, and videos. An avid outdoorsman, Gary enjoys sailing his Hobie Cat 16, camping at Higgins Lake in Michigan, and kayaking and bass fishing on the Maumee River. He enjoys doing the many simple things of life with family: walking with Lori on hiking trails at Oak Openings Preserve and Side Cut Park, windsurfing, fishing and kayaking with his son Gary, and helping his daughter Kristy fix her car and build things.

His other interests and hobbies included genealogy, playing ragtime and march piano music, fishing, reading, computers, home repair projects, the history of Custer’s Last Stand, local history, maps, and micro-brew beer sampling.

Gary was active in area engineering societies and activities. He served as the Vice-President of Programs for the Technical Society of Toledo and several terms as a trustee for the Toledo Society of Professional Engineers. Gary was a registered professional engineer in fourteen states. He served several terms as a trustee of the Engineers Foundation of Ohio and was instrumental in organizing the EFO’s “MathCounts” program locally and statewide as chairman. During the construction of the Maumee-Perrysburg Bridge in 2002, Gary operated an Internet website documenting the construction with more than 600 pictures and historical information. Later he authored a book, "Bridges At The Foot Of The Rapids - An Illustrated History of Maumee-Perrysburg, Ohio River Crossings And Construction of the 2002 Fort Meigs Memorial Bridge". He also wrote another local history book: The Maumee & Western Reserve Road: Its History and a Survey of the Milestones".

He is a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church in Perrysburg and has served on the church’s Family Life Council, Worship Committee, Administrative Council, Good Samaritan Council, and Usher’s Committee.

Gary married Living, daughter of Carl Edward GOBEL and Marian Lucille HUFFMAN, on 9 Sep 1967. Lori was born on 13 Jun 1945 in Findlay, OH.

From the Toledo Blade newspaper 10-Sep-1967: Loretta Ann Gobel, Matson Street, became the bride of Gary L. Franks in a ceremony Saturday in Monroe Street Methodist Church. Mrs. Franks is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Gobel, Bloomdale, O., and Mr. Franks is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Al Franks, Yosemite Drive. Following a reception in Reeder Hall of the church, Mr. and Mrs. Franks left on a trip to the Pocono Mountains. They will live at 3140 Matson St.

Lori is a graduate of the Elmwood High School Class of 1963 and was active in many school activities and the Bloomdale “Cloverettes”. She worked part-time as a “Candy Striper” at Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green and it was there that she established that she wanted to become a nurse and care for other people. She earned her Degree in Nursing at the former Toledo Hospital School of Nursing in 1966. Upon graduation, Lori joined Toledo Hospital as a full-time Registered Nurse in the Psychiatric Ward. In 1969, she was promoted to Head Nurse on the floor.

In 1970, Lori “retired” to become a full-time mother to her newborn son, Gary. In 1973, she gave birth to her daughter, Kristin. She was a very devoted wife and mother, always putting the other needs and wants of the family before her own. She was an excellent homemaker and housekeeper, being well-noted among her friends for having a “dustless” home at all times. This was a real challenge at times considering the habits of two teenagers and a husband predisposed to making a mess in his computer room.

She married Gary L. Franks of Toledo on September 9, 1967 in Monroe Street Methodist Church in Toledo. They moved to Perrysburg in 1969 and made their home there on Margaret Place and Mark Lane before moving to Belmont Lake Road in 1986. Lori is very interested in house plants and gardening and keeps more than 80 varieties of indoor plants. She enjoys camping with the family every summer at Higgins Lake in Michigan and doing the many simple things of life with them: walking with Gary on hiking trails at Oak Openings every spring and fall, playing board games with her son Gary, and cooking, shopping and doing art projects with her daughter Kristy. Her other interests and hobbies include sewing, nature, walking, bridge card games, and volleyball.

She is a long-time member of Grace United Methodist Church in Perrysburg and has served on the church’s Family Life Council and Administrative Council.
