Obituary from the Toledo Blade newspaper: Claren "Mouse" Maurer, Jr., age 77, of Swanton, Ohio, died Monday, January 24, 2005, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born in Findlay, Ohio, on February 12, 1927, and was a 1945 graduate of Sylvania Burnham High School. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. On November 7, 1948, he married Ila Mae Judson and they have resided in Swanton for over 56 years. He enjoyed carpentry and built both of their homes during that time. Most of his working years were spent at The Pilliod Cabinet Company in charge of building maintenance and trucking. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Swanton, for many years. He enjoyed bowling (scoring a 727 series in 1960), fishing, Western square dancing, traveling (making trips to Switzerland, Alaska, Nova Scotia, the Western states, and the Outer Banks), and being with friends. He was a Life Member of the Swanton Volunteer Fire Department, actively serving over 36 years, many as an Assistant Chief. He was also active in the Northwest Ohio Volunteer Firemen's Association, serving as its President in 1979-1980. In retirement he took up the game of golf and enjoyed scoring a hole-in-one in September, 2001. He was preceded in death by his mother, Maleta, and stepfather, James F. Ruffner. He is survived by his wife, Ila Mae; a son, Christopher (Mary Jo), and loved grandson, Nicholas Maurer of Sylvania; brothers, Keith Ruffner of Weston and Jerry (Jan) Ruffner of Bowling Green; a sister, Janet (Jim) Casacchia of Prescott, Arizona; as well as many other dear family members, friends, and classmates. Friends may call on Thursday, January 27th, from 2 to 9 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home, 204 Chestnut St. in Swanton (419-826-2631). The members of the Swanton Fire Department will hold a memorial service Thursday evening at 7:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 28th, at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Pastors John Schlicher and Steve Judson officiating. Interment will follow at the Swanton Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.
