JIMMY ROHR / Longtime Band Leader Served Union

Jimmy Rohr, a longtime dance bandleader and former business agent for the musicians' union, died yesterday in Foundation Park Care Center. He was 76. Mr. Rohr, of South Toledo, had been in declining health since he broke a hip late last year. Until five years ago, Mr. Rohr and his group played private parties and weddings each weekend. "For years and years, he played at the Toledo Club on Saturday night," his son, Jeffrey, said. Jimmy Rohr's Orchestra earlier had played at Luna Pier, the Trianon Ballroom, Paramount Theater, Forest Park in Ottawa County, and Centennial Terrace. "I can remember a lot of high school proms with Jimmy," said orchestra leader Johnny Knorr, who played saxophone and clarinet with the Rohr group in the1950s. "He had a good rapport with us musicians." For about 25 years, beginning in the mid-1960s, Mr. Rohr was business agent for the Toledo Federation of Musicians. Two of his duties were to collect dues from out-of-town musicians playing in Toledo and to make sure union and non-union musicians didn't play together, Mr. Knorr said. "It's not a pleasant job by any means," Mr. Knorr said. "But he had a job to do. He handled it quite well. I never saw him get upset." In the job, he met many traveling musicians, including such rock stars as Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin - an experience his children found more thrilling than he did, his son said. Also surviving are his wife, Marjorie; sons, James and Jay; daughters, Janet Schultz, Julie Keefer, and Joan Loucks; brother, Frank; 10 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. The body will be in the Coyle Mortuary, South Reynolds Road, after 2 p.m. tomorrow. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Gesu Church, where Mr. Rohr was a member. The family requests tributes to the Alzheimer's Association.
