Dorothy Ellen MARTIN "Tippy" was born on 13 Mar 1920 in Toledo, OH. She died on 1 Oct 2004 in Maumee, OH. She married Walter Richard ADKINS in 1941.

Obituary from the Toledo Blade newspaper: Dorothy E. Adkins, affectionately known as "Tip", passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on October 1, 2004, at her home on River Road in Maumee. Born March 13, 1920, in Toledo, Ohio, Dorothy was the daughter of C. Verne Martin, a patent attorney, and Clara Ellen (Wadhams) Martin, a grade school teacher. She was the youngest of three sisters. Dorothy attended DeVeaux School in West Toledo and graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1937 and from business college in 1939. On October 12, 1040, she married Walter R. Adkins of Toledo, a professional engineer. As a young wife and mother during World War II, Dorothy maintained the household and children while her husband was on duty in the U.S. Army. After her husband returned from service, Dorothy began her business career, when in 1949 the couple opened a grocery store on Douglas Road in West Toledo, the former Adkins Market. Since her husband was also employed full time as an engineer, Dorothy acted as the day manager of the grocery store while raising her eight children. She and her husband operated the market for 16 years, selling it in the mid 1960's to enter the real estate business. As co-owner and manager of Douglas Investments Inc., Dorothy personally handled the day-to-day operations of the couple's apartment business for the next thirty years, retiring in 1999 at the age of 79. At her retirement, Dorothy's career as a Toledo businesswoman had spanned almost fifty years. Above all, Dorothy's greatest passion was that of being a matriarch and a caregiver. Her family was her priority. Dorothy's love and compassion extended over six generations: two before her, three following her. She met great challenges in the raising of eight children born to her over a twenty-three year time span. In her role as a mother, she was often a negotiator, a disciplinarian, an arbitrator and a taskmaster. In filling the responsibilities of motherhood, she will always be remembered for her unconditional love given to each of her children and their families. Dorothy loved to laugh, to enjoy friends and family, and to have fun times. She lived life to the fullest and was even known to be a bit "feisty"! Dorothy also loved to travel with her family and friends, and took many trips all over the world, as well as throughout the United States. Some of her favorite times were spent with her friends and family at summer cottages in the Irish Hills, on spring outings to Daytona Beach, Florida, and on many Caribbean cruises with large groups of friends. On one of her trips in the United States, she and her husband drove all the way to California and back in an open Cadillac convertible. She continued to travel into her eighties which led to such adventures as riding a camel in Egypt at the age of 80, and experiencing a significant earthquake while visiting a Roman cathedral. Dorothy also loved to socialize with her circle of friends. She was a talented ballroom dancer, and she and her husband belonged to dance clubs in the 1950's and 1960's. She also was an avid bridge player, belonging to two bridge clubs during that same period. In her early years, she was a member of the Rainbow Girls and the Eastern Star, and later she remained involved with the Maumee Elks Lodge No. 1850, even after her husband's death in 1995. Dorothy was also a lady of dignity, integrity, and faith. She was an active and dedicated member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Toledo all of her life, having been a parishioner from the founding of the church. In all, Dorothy Adkins led a very complete life, loved by her family and friends, and was even able to pass away peacefully in her bedroom at home, as she had always wished. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, C. Verne and Clara E. Martin; her sister, Virginia Wiltse (2003); her husband, Walter Adkins (1995); her son-in-law, Joseph Zawadzki (2004), and one infant son, Joseph (1963). She is survived by her sister, Margaret M. Mull of Canton, OH; eight children, Merrilee A. Zawadzki of Canton, MI, Karen J. Turner (Robert) of Maumee, OH, Thomas W. Adkins of Toledo, OH, James M. Adkins of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Richard V. Adkins (Sue) of Green Acres, FL, John F. Adkins (Beverly) of Maumee, OH, Beth E. Meyers (Gary) of Columbia, SC, and David R. Adkins (Cathy) of Sylvania, OH; fifteen grandchildren, Michael Zawadzki, Fort Mill, NC, Anne Howell, Canton, MI, Robert K. Turner, Sylvania, OH, Jessica Sparks, Maumee, OH, Joshua Adkins, Toledo, OH, Aaron Adkins, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Nicole Rice, Swanton, OH, Richard Adkins, Toledo, OH, Andrew, Sean and Ian Adkins of Maumee, OH, Kimberly Schmidt, Fort Campbell, KY, Amanda and Jason Adkins, Sylvania, OH; twelve great-grandchildren; as well as eleven nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. M. Nazzal and Dr. T. Tafelski of MCO for their conscientious care which afforded Dorothy the opportunity to enjoy an active, quality life during the months since her stroke in early November, 2003. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at Boyer-VanWormer-Scott Funeral Home, 5055 Secor Road, Toledo. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2004 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 2770 West Central Avenue, Toledo, with Fr. Lynn McCallum officiating.
