Obituary from the Albuequerque Journal: Mary Alice Vaughan, a longtime Albuquerque resident, died May 27, 2004, after a long illness. She was 95 years old and had lived in Albuquerque for 31 years. Mary Alice Mandler was born April 6, 1909, in Toledo, Ohio, the daughter of Bessie Wachter Mandler and Charles Jacob Mandler. She grew up in Toledo's Old West End neighborhood in a home designed by her uncle, noted Ohio architect Harry Wachter. She attended Wellesley University, graduating in 1931 with a degree in zoology and mathematics. She married Clyde E. Vaughan on September 5, 1933, in Toledo, and they subsequently moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., and then to Darien, Conn. In 1951, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., to open their own business, Home Supply Co. They retired to Albuquerque in 1973. Mrs. Vaughan was active in the Wellesley Alumni Association and the Daughters of the American Revolution and a former member of the Paradise Hills Country Club. She enjoyed golf, gardening and bridge. She is survived by two children, James E. Vaughan of Windsor, Colo., and Nancy J. Shughart of Albuquerque; a daughter-in-law, Linda Vaughan of Thornton, Colo.; eight grandchildren, Kevin Vaughan and his wife, Colleen, of Thornton, Colo., Abby Downs and her husband, Michael, of Indianapolis, Jennifer Schmidts and her husband, Volkmar, of Bettendorf, Iowa, Katie Crane and her husband, Rod, of Winter Park, Fla., Betsy Vaughan of Davis, Calif., Rebecca Vaughan of Denver, Ellen Vaughan of Miami, Fla., and Lyman Vaughan of Greeley, Colo.; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Peter J. Vaughan; and one grandson. Service will be Sunday, June 6, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at French Mortuary - Westside Chapel. A private graveside will be Monday at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. She was born October 31, 1938, in Darien, CT, and was a daughter of the late Clyde Edward Vaughan and Mary Alice (Mandler) Vaughan. Nancy was the widow of LCDR James Norris Shughart, US Navy who died May 16, 1971. She graduated from Cheyenne Mountain High School in Colorado Springs, CO and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO, and where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega Sorority. Nancy was a homemaker and also worked in the medical field doing clerical and accounting tasks. She is survived by three daughters, Abigail L. (and her husband, Michael) Downs of Indianapolis, Jennifer (and her husband, Volkmar) Schmidts of Bettendorf, IA and Katherine (and her husband, Rod) Crane of Winter Park, FL, one brother, James E. Vaughan of Windsor, CO and nine grandchildren. Nancy was also preceded in death by one brother, Peter J. Vaughan. Graveside services will be held Friday, March 20, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. in the Gettysburg National Cemetery - Annex in Gettysburg, PA with Rev. R. Lindsay Ingram officiating.
