Grafton BAKER's ancestors emigrated to the United States from Great Britain, first settling in Harford Co, MD, then Brooke Co , [West] Virginia, then in Harrison Twp / Stark Co, OH (now Brown Twp, Carroll Co, OH) and finally in Washington Twp / Hancock Co, OH in the year 1834. Grafton served in the War of 1812.

From the book "History of Arcadia": The Methodist Episcopal Society of Arcadia is presently known as the Arcadia Methodist Church. It was organized in about 1832 in the home of Grafton Baker, who was the first leader of the society. Early services were held at intervals of four weeks in the Baker home by Reverend Day, the first regular pastor of the society. These meetings continued for two years; then a round church that was made of logs was built on the Baker farm.

According to Brown's History of Hancock County - 1886, Grafton and Mary had a total of seven (7) children of whom only Garret was alive at the time the book was written.

JOHN H ECKERT'S WILL (Index to Hancock County Wills Book 3 Page 92) 26-Feb-1866: John Eckert on his death bed made the following request that "his property be equally divided both personal and real between Sullivan Eckert, Catherine Baker, Mrs. Susan Morrill his own children and Louisa E. Huffman an adopted daughter after the death of my wife Sally Eckert. All property to remain under the full control and disposal of said Sally Eckhart my beloved wife during her natural life. She to keep up and pay all expense of carrying on farm, pay my taxes , etc. The said Louisa E. Huffman in case of death or dying without issue then her share of my property shall fall back to my son Sullivan Eckhart and his heirs.

John BAKER was a Justice of the Peace for 23 years starting in 1883. Biography from "Centennial Biographical History of Hancock County, Ohio": JOHN BAKER, farmer, P. O. Arcadia, was born in Cass Township, this county, in 1847; son of Alexander and Catharine (Eckert) Baker, natives of Ohio. The original Baker stock came to America from England in an early day and settled near Baltimore, Md. Grafton Baker, grandfather of our subject, moved from Virginia to Carroll County, Ohio, and from there to this county about the year 1830. He had a family of five sons and one daughter. Mrs. Catharine (Eckert) Baker's people came to Cass Township, this county, from Fairfield County, Ohio, in an early day, and here settled. In 1844, after their marriage, our subject's parents came to Cass Township. The father died in 1849, leaving a family of three children-two daughters and one son, John. The eldest daughter died in 1866; the youngest married G. W. Norris (they have a family of two sons and one daughter). The subject of this sketch was married in 1868 to Sarah C. Binger, whose parents came to this county from Carroll County, Ohio, in an early day, and to this union have been born three children: Alexander, Lemuel and Amanda. Mr. Baker was elected to the office of justice of the peace for Cass Town ship in the fall of 1883, which he still holds. He resides on the old homestead, his mother, who is still living, being with him.

Obituary from the Findlay Morning Republican newspaper: JOHN BAKER, 80, TAKEN BY DEATH - Cass township farmer Expires In Home Where He Was Born - After a six months illness with a complication of diseases, John Baker, 80 years old, died at his home in Cass Township, Wednesday morning at 8;30 o'clock. Mr. Baker had been a lifelong resident of Cass Township having been born in the home where he died. He was born Jan. 5, 1847. Alexander and Catherine Baker were his parents' names. In 1868 he was married to Sarah Binger who preceded him in death several years ago. One son and one daughter survive him. They are Lemuel Baker of Bloomdale and Mrs. Amanda Huffman of Cass Township. Other children: Allen, Debba J., Alexander, Jeremiah and an infant preceded him in death. The time of the funeral has not been announced. Services will be held at the home with Rev. G. E. Coleman of Arcadia officiating. Burial will be made in the Baker Cemetery in Cass Township. Cars will leave the Coldren and Coleman Funeral Home for the accomodation of any who wish to attend the funeral.

Sarah Catherine BINGER [Parents] was born on 10 Feb 1847 in Hancock Co, OH. She died on 25 Jul 1887 in Hancock Co, OH. She was buried in Hancock Co, OH / Baker-Hamlin Cemetery. She married John BAKER on 16 Jan 1868.

Obituary from the Findlay Morning Republican newspaper: LONG ILLNESS ENDS FOR CASS TOWNSHIP MAN - Alexander Baker Dies After 20 Years Of Ill Health From Tuberculosis - Was Member Of Salem M. E. Church - Alexander Baker, 60 years old, died from tuberculosis at 6:15 Tuesday evening at his home in Cass Township following an illness of 20 years. Mr. Baker had been a life-long resident of Hancock County. He was the son of John and Sarah Baker, and is survived by his father who lives in Arcadia. In 1895 he married Marian E. taylor, to which union four children were born. Three survive and live at home: Earl J., Helen and Garnet. Lemuel Baker, a brother and Mrs. Ouida Huffman, a sister, both of Arcadia, also survive. Mr. Baker was a member of Cass Township Grange and belonged to the Salem M. E. Church. Funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning with Rev. F. M. Osborn, of Arcadia, in charge. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

Marion Esther TAYLOR was born on 28 Mar 1875. She died on 23 Mar 1966 in Findlay, OH. She was buried in Findlay, OH / Maple Grove Cemetery. She married Alexander BAKER on 27 Jun 1895.

Obituary from the Findlay Courier newspaper: Mrs. Marion Esther Miller, 90, 138 W. Foulke Ave., died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday in Blanchard Valley Hospital of a heart attack. A native of Findlay, she was born March 28, 1876 to Eli and Amelia (Lemon) Taylor. Her first husband, Alexander Baker, whom she married June 27, 1895, died Sept. 2, 1919. She then married Murray S. Miller on Dec. 23, 1945 and he died July 25, 1951. She is survived by one son, Earl Baker of 201 prospect Ave.; two daughters, Mrs. Helen Gassman of 138 W. Foulke Ave., and Mrs. J. C. (Garnet) Kunkle of Brownsville, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Edith Cramer of Okeechobee, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Hazel, two brothers, Charles and Cloyce Taylor, and a sister, Mrs. Hattie Hughes, preceded her in death. She was a member of Howard Methodist Church. Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. monday in the Trautman Funeral Home, the Rev. Clarence Miller officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. The body is at the Trautman Funeral Home, where friends may call after 7 p.m. Saturday.
