Obituary from the Toledo Blade newspaper: Mrs. Margaret B. Kranz, 88, of Glenview road, who had satisfied the sweet tooth needs of thousands of South Toledo children during her 40 years as manager of a neighborhood confectionery, died Sunday in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. The widow of Otto Kranz, she had lived the last six months with her son, Ray Kranz, in Pittsburgh. Mrs. Kranz was former manager of the Glendale Sweet Shop, on Glendale Avenue, which had been a haven for children attending adjacent Harvard Elementary School, as well as for adults. Not only did she dish up sodas, sundaes, malteds, milk shakes and cones by the score, but Mrs. Kranz presided over a large array of penny candy which was especially popular with youngsters. She also did cooking in the shop, which served soups, sandwiches and other light repasts. The school did not serve hot lunches at that time and many children took advantage of Mrs. Kranz's offerings rather than going home. Teachers and factory workers from nearby industries also were regular diners. The store also maintained big displays of school supplies. Mrs. Kranz retired from the shop in 1958, but she continued many years as an election booth official near her former home in North Toledo. Ten years ago, Mrs. Kranz was cited by the Board of Elections as the oldest poll worker in the city, having been in charge of counting the ballots in her home precinct for more than 50 years. Also surviving is her daughter, Mrs. Jane Geoffrion. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Walker-Feilbach Mortuary, Talmadge Road, where the body will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday. The family requests that any tributes be in the form of contributions to Lutheran Church Women of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Toledo.
