Florence M. (Brown) Shepler, formerly of Temperance, MI, Port Clinton and Oregon, OH, passed from this world on Saturday, July 2, 2011 at Otterbein-Portage Valley Retirement Center, Pemberville, at the age of 94. Florence was born in Sylvania to Ralph E. and Nellie (Phillips) Brown and was the eldest of five children. Her siblings included: Dorothy Conrad, Ruth Allen, Ralph E. Brown, Jr., Susan (Bill) Walters and Arthur Brown, Sr. She married Curtis Shepler, Sr. and the couple had five children: Curt Jr. (Joan Ballard), Wadsworth, Sandra Mattier, Oregon, Tom Sr. (Nancy Kemp), Pensacola, FL, Kathy (Todd) Brown, Genoa, and Jack Sr. (Charma), Pensacola, FL. Florence lived a full life. She helped raise her five siblings and raised five children of her own. The first car she drove was a Model-T, she got to fly on an airplane, watch a man fly into space and walk on the moon, owned a crank for service telephone and drove a VW Bug. Florence was God's child, loving each person equally and fully and she never spoke badly of anyone. She will be remembered for her smile, her eagerness to be helpful to all people she met, for lots and lots hugs (her remedy for everything sad), for playing rummy and trying to "sneak" cards that don't "play" into the game, and for walking hundreds of miles in the halls of her residences watching "Wheel" and Jeopardy, always ready to give you that special smile. Florence will be sadly missed by her children; thirteen grandchildren, Jennifer (Greg) Armour, Michael (Sheryl) Kubiak, Tom Jr., Curt III, Sonya (Jason ) Price, Mark Kubiak, Jacki (Steve) Stocker, Nathan (Angela) Holman, Katherine Shepler, Jessica (Charles) Elliott, Jon, Jack Jr. and Stephanie Shepler; nineteen great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, as well as many friends she made during her journey on this earth. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave., Toledo (west of Corey Rd.). Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 7, 2011 at St. John Lutheran Church, 222 Adams St., Port Clinton, OH 43452 with the Rev. James Lehman presiding. Additional visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday in the church and continue until the time of services. Committal rites and burial will take place in Catawba Island Cemetery. A luncheon will follow at the church. Memorials are suggested to the church.

Obituary from the Toledo Blade newspaper: John Robert Shepler Sr., 63, of Centerton, Arkansas, formerly of Genoa, died Monday, September 24, 2007, in Northwest Medical Center, Bentonville, Arkansas. He was born July 21, 1944, in Toledo, Ohio, to Curtis D. and Nellie L. (Hensley) Shepler. He married Delores J. Strohscher in Monroe, MI, on March 23, 1963, and she preceded him in death September 6, 1999. John worked as a crane and heavy equipment operator and medically retired in 1975 from Jeffers Crane Service in Toledo. He loved NASCAR, football, and drag racing, and in earlier years was a racer himself of drag bikes and sprint cars. He loved to travel and work on motorcycles and cars. John was inquisitive, adventurous and self-educated. He had a fondness for history, military history, and politics. John is survived by his sons, John R. Shepler Jr. of Genoa and Jeremy T. (Jennifer) Shepler of Perrysburg; daughter-in-law, Deb Shepler of Rossford; eight grandchildren; two great-grand-children and sisters, Betty Caldwell of Toledo, Joan Erlich of Arizona, and Mary Lou Baertschi of Toledo. His parents; wife and son, Bryan Jay Shepler, preceded him in death. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the Genoa American Legion Hall, 302 West Street, Genoa, Ohio, Sunday, October 7, 2007, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. for a celebration of John's life and the joining of his late wife in eternity. Arrangements have been handled by Robinson-Walker Funeral Home, Genoa.

Obituary from the Akron Beacon-Journal newspaper: Curtis W. Shepler Jr., 73, of Wadsworth took his final rest on earth in the arms of his Savior and Lord, Saturday March 16, 2013. He was born June 3, 1939 in Temperance, MI to the late Curtis W. Sr. and Florence M. Shepler. Curt was a graduate of Bedford High School, Temperance, MI class of 1957 and started the Bedford Class Reunion Committee, notifying graduates of upcoming reunions and started a yearly reunion in Florida. On Valentine's Day 1960 he fell in love and started a wonderful family with his beloved Joan. He had a great love of God's creation and enjoyed camping, hiking, gardening and photography. Curt enjoyed getting involved in his church and community; he served as the Cub Scout committee chairman at Grace Lutheran Church for Pack 3401 and later received the highest scouting honor an adult could receive and was given the "Wood Badge" in both the Cub and Boy Scouts. He also played a very integral part in the stained glass restoration with an emphasis on the Rose Window at Grace Lutheran. He also was head of the Sound and Video and was instrumental in getting the services broadcast on the Wadsworth Cable Channel. He served his community by serving as President of the board for Medina County Office for Older Adults, was active with the Wadsworth Senior Center and served on the Wadsworth Cable Commission. Curt retired from First Energy after 37 years of dedicated service, he began in sales and retired as a Computer Analyst which helped to start his love of computers. He also took over the Florida reunions for First Energy Retirees. Curt is survived by his wife Joan (nee Ballard) with whom he celebrated 52 years of marriage, their children: Jennie (Greg) Armour of West Chester, OH, Curt ( Karen) Shepler of Wadsworth, grandchildren: Justin and Kayla Shepler of Wadsworth, Jon (Michelle) Armour, Ben Armour and one great grandson Franklyn Armour of West Chester. His siblings are: Sandy (Clif) Elliott of Wooster, OH, Tom (Nancy) Shepler of Pensacola, FL, Kathy (Todd) Brown of Genoa, OH, and Jack (Charma) Shepler of Pensacola, FL. There are numerous nieces and nephews also surviving. The family will receive friends 1-3 P.M. Saturday March 23 at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 146 High St. Wadsworth, where a memorial service will follow at 3:00 P.M. with The Rev. Daniel J. Cammarn officiating. Obituary from the San Luis Obispo Tribune: Frederick E. "Fred" Stone, 96, passed away June 28, 2004, in Fresno. At Fred's request, no services will be held. Fred was born in Fresno, but moved to Porterville with his parents as a small child. He graduated from Porterville High School in 1926 and received his bachelor's and law degrees from Stanford University. He practiced law in Porterville from 1933 to 1942 and from 1945 to 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1947 Fred was appointed to the Tulare County Superior Court, where he served until his appointment to the California Court of Appeals in Fresno in 1961. He retired as presiding justice of that court in 1972. During his years on the courts, he served two terms on the State Judicial Council and was president of the California Judges Association from 1968 to 1969. After retirement in 1972, Fred and his wife, Edna, whom he married in 1936, moved from Visalia to Cayucos. In 2001 he moved to Fresno and resided at Fairwinds Retirement Community until his death. Fred is survived by his sister, Mary Alice McLaughlin; sons, John Stone and wife Mary and William Stone and wife Diane; and four grandsons, Kyle, James, Jeffrey and Michael. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Bridge, in 2000. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cayucos Land Conservancy, P.O. Box 336, Cayucos, CA 93430.
